ECHR: Cases involving disabled people in institutional care brought to the European Court of Human Rights

INTERIGHTS - the International Centre for the Legal Protection of Human Rights, an organisation for the promotion of human rights and freedoms based in London, has brought several cases to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg involving people with disabilities in institutional care. The three applications were filed against Lithuania and Romania, in cooperation with local partner organisations.

ENIL Freedom Drive 2009

Organised by the European Network on Independent Living, the Freedom Drive is an opportunity for people with disabilities from all European countries to join together and converge on the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This year's Fourth Freedom Drive will take place on the week of the 14 September.

Video on Community-Based Mental Health Care

Mental health care reform across the WHO European Region is leading to the closure of psychiatric hospital beds and the opening of supported homes in the community. The WHO Regional Office for Europe is highlighting a 15 minute documentary film, which tells the story of a supported residence in Cerrik, Albania. Less than a year after its opening in March 2008, four out of 12 patients went back to their families. The video is in Albanian with English subtitles.

Indicators on Housing and Independent Living (UK)

The Office for Disability Issues, UK (ODI) has published its newest disability equality indicators on housing and independent living, covering households living in non-decent accomodation and 16-18 year olds not in employment, education or training.
